How does an RGB LED floodlight work?

RGB technology uses red, green and blue LEDs whose intensity is combined to produce different colours. An integrated or external controller manages each channel and can provide fixed colours, automatic changes, transitions and other effects.

The white created by an RGB luminaire is produced by mixing the three colours and may look different from light generated by a dedicated white LED. If practical white illumination is required in addition to colour effects, check whether the model includes an independent white channel.

RGB floodlights for gardens and façades

An outdoor RGB floodlight can illuminate trees, palm trees, walls, façades, columns, gardens, terraces and decorative features. Coloured light makes it possible to adapt the atmosphere for celebrations, seasons, commercial campaigns and events.

For a uniform result, consider the distance between the floodlight and the surface, mounting height and angle of inclination. Positioning the light too close can create an intense central area, while a greater distance provides wider coverage.

Power, lumens and beam angle

Wattage indicates electricity consumption but does not determine brightness by itself. Compare lumens and the specifications for each colour, as perceived brightness varies according to the selected tone.

The beam angle determines the width of the illuminated area. A narrow beam concentrates the light on trees, columns and architectural details. A wide beam covers façades, walls, stages and larger surfaces.

Remote, app and professional control

Depending on the model, RGB floodlights may be controlled through infrared remote control, radio frequency, mobile application, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or professional systems such as DMX. Each technology provides a different operating range and set of functions.

Infrared remote controls normally require a direct line of sight to the receiver. Radio-frequency systems generally do not, while app-based solutions may support scenes, schedules and groups of luminaires.

Before ordering, check whether several floodlights can be synchronised and whether they remember the last colour or programme after power is disconnected. These functions are important in multi-luminaire installations.

IP protection and outdoor resistance

For outdoor installation, check the floodlight’s IP protection rating. The luminaire, cable, connectors and junction boxes must all be suitable for the conditions at the installation location.

Protection against rain does not necessarily mean that the floodlight can be submerged or installed inside a swimming pool. Near water, observe the required safety distances and only use products specifically designed for that location.

Installation and positioning

The mounting bracket should be fixed to a stable surface and allow the beam to be aimed without exposing the luminaire to movement or vibration. Do not cover the floodlight or obstruct its heat dissipation.

Mains connections must be completed with the electrical supply disconnected and using components suitable for outdoor use. Permanent, commercial and damp-area installations should be completed or inspected by a qualified electrician.
