12V DC LED strips for decorative and functional lighting

12V DC LED strips provide a flexible solution for illuminating furniture, shelves, display cabinets, kitchens, bedrooms, stairs, vehicles, caravans and architectural features. Their low-voltage direct-current operation makes them suitable for compact installations and custom lighting projects.

At DomiLED you will find 12-volt LED strip lights with different power ratings, LED densities, luminous outputs, colour temperatures and IP protection ratings. Before choosing a strip, calculate the total length, determine the required brightness and select a compatible power supply.

Power supply for a 12V LED strip

A 12V DC LED strip must not be connected directly to a 230V electrical installation. For use in a home or commercial space, it requires a 230V to 12V DC power supply that safely converts the voltage.

Calculate the required power by multiplying the strip’s consumption per metre by the total length. For example, a strip consuming 10 W per metre over a five-metre run will require approximately 50 W. Include additional capacity so the power supply does not continuously operate at its maximum output.

Voltage drop in 12V installations

Long runs may experience voltage drop, which can appear as a gradual reduction in brightness or a change of colour towards the end of the strip. This depends on the power consumption, total length, cable cross-section and circuit design.

Voltage drop can be reduced by using correctly sized cables, powering the strip from both ends or adding intermediate power injection points. For larger projects, dividing the installation into several shorter sections is usually preferable to connecting the entire length in a single run.

Warm, neutral, cool white and RGB strips

Warm white is suitable for living rooms, bedrooms, restaurants and spaces requiring a comfortable atmosphere. Neutral white provides balanced illumination for kitchens, display cabinets and shops, while cool white creates a brighter appearance in working areas.

12V RGB LED strips allow colours and lighting effects to be selected through a compatible controller. To adjust the brightness of a single-colour strip, install a 12V DC dimmer between the power supply and the strip.

Cutting, connection and installation

LED strips should only be cut at the points indicated by the manufacturer. Always observe the positive and negative polarity when making connections. Reversed polarity will normally prevent the strip from operating correctly.

Installation in an aluminium LED profile improves the finish, assists with heat dissipation and may extend the service life of the LEDs. For damp areas or outdoor use, choose a suitable IP rating and correctly protect all cut points, connections and ends.
